Joe Long holds a BA and HDE from NUIG. Diploma in Career Guidance from UCD. He is a member of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and of the British Psychological Association.

Joe taught in St Jarlath’s College Tuam from 1976 and was full-time Guidance Counsellor from 1986 until 2010. He served as Deputy Principal from 2005 until 2009. In this video, Joe outlines the approach he uses when dealing with second-level students aiming to make informed subject and career choices.
He developed the Guidance Plan for St Jarlath’s and provided talks to parents on Options for School Leavers, Choosing Subjects for Senior Cycle and on Transition from Primary to Secondary school.
He carries out one-to-one sessions with students and, if required, parents. He also runs the popular and innovative Sli Nua Careers Transition Year programme.
