In this blog, we explain the theory behind the 500m rule. This is an interview between Liam Horan, MD of Sli Nua Careers and myself, Fintan Dunne. In this audio, we will discuss the topic of how to prepare properly for a job interview. Draw a circle of 500m around the location where the interview is being held.

From once you are within this area, you are in interview mode. The first step to interview success is parking your car in the right area of the car park, not parking on a double yellow line for example. Arriving on time is crucial in making a good first impression on your potential employer. Make sure that your phone is turned off. If you want a cigarette, make sure to smoke it before you reach the 500m zone.

Keep in mind to be friendly and courteous to everyone you come into contact with. When the interview is over, make sure to thank the secretary. On leaving the 500m zone, you can have a tea or coffee to relax as the interview is now over. Enjoy the rest of your day.

A debrief is important so you can look back at what you did well and what you didn’t. This evaluation helps you to improve for future interviews.
